Falling down on the job

St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester had more patients fall than other comparable hospitals, according to the Massachusetts Hospital Association.

The association released patient fall statistics for state hospitals recently, the first voluntary release of such information of its kind in the nation, according to the MHA.

The new report studied the number of patient falls and falls with injury per 1,000 patient days from October 2006 to March of this year. In Worcester, UMass Memorial Medical Center was below its peer group average for falls per 1,000 patient days while Saint Vincent's was above its peer group in several categories.

The MHA will also release data on patient bedsores later this year, another first of its kind. The releases are part of the MHA's Patients First initiative, which aims to increase transparency, quality and safety, the MHA said. Information about all state hospitals can be found at www.patientsfirstma.org.
