A spokeswomen for Fidelity Investments confirmed to the Worcester Business Journal this afternoon that its customer service phone center at its Marlboro offices will be closed, affecting a "few hundred employees."
"We believe it makes the most sense to consolidate our phone operations in other locations that we have," said Anne Crowley, a Fidelity spokeswoman.
Crowley declined to give a specific number of employees that will be affected, saying only that it's a "few hundred" and said the phone operations would be closed completely by late June 2008.
Crowley said the Marlboro phone service employees will be able to apply for positions at the company's other locations, but stopped short of saying their employment was guaranteed.
"They will have the opportunity to be redeployed," she said.
Crowley also said the company has hundreds of opportunities available throughout the region and the nation.
As of May 2006, Fidelity had about 3,600 employees at its Marlboro campus. The company previously announced plans to reduce its footprint in the town, and Crowley said the company is still planning to vacate a 125,000-square-foot building on Forest Street. However, she added that Fidelity would continue to "maintain a large presence in Marlboro."
The news comes on the heels of an announcement in February from Fidelity that it would be expanding its operations in a Dallas suburb, creating 1,535 new jobs there, according to published reports.
