The owner of Alpha Healthcare, a Swansea-based skilled nursing facility with a location in Franklin, has been cited about $1.1 million for penalties and unpaid wages to hundreds of employees.
William Segal was cited by the Office of Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell after the office received multiple employee complaints of untimely wage payments.
After a subsequent investigation, the AG’s office found Segal in violation of the state’s wage and hour laws. Between Sept. 15 and Sept. 28, the AG’s office asserts Segal neglected to make timely payments to nearly 500 company employees working at private rehabilitation facilities in Franklin, Fall River, Newburyport, Swansea, and Stoughton, according to a Tuesday press release from AG’s office.
Massachusetts law mandates employers must pay employee wages for all time worked within six days following the end of a pay period.
Segal could not be reached for comment. When WBJ reached Uma Das Munshi by phone for comment, who is listed as Alpha’s CEO on the company’s website, she said she had previously resigned and had no information on the circumstances.
Restitutions were paid to individual employees with a receiver overseeing the financial management of Alpha.
“When employers violate our laws, including by failing to make timely wage payments, the economic security of workers and their families is unfairly put at risk,” Campbell said in the release. “My office will continue to enforce our laws to protect and empower workers, reminding employers that Massachusetts is serious about protecting workers’ rights.”
