First-time unemployment claims inch down

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 308,000 Americans filed for unemployment insurance benefits during the week ended Oct. 6.

That's a decrease of 12,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 320,000. The 4-week moving average was 310,250, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 313,250.

The advance insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ended Sept. 29, unchanged from the prior week.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 29 was 2,521,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the preceding week.
