The number of foreclosure deeds filed in the state dipped 2 percent compared to last year, but did little to stem the tide of foreclosures washing up in Massachusetts.
There were 998 foreclosure deeds filed in the state in August, according to Boston-based real estate tracker The Warren Group. That's down from 1,018 in August of 2007, but a total of 8,804 foreclosure deeds have been filed year-to-date, a 79 percent increase compared to the same period a year ago.
Petitions to foreclose, the first step in the foreclosure process, were up 87.8 percent in August compared to July, but down 69.7 percent compared to August 2007. Year-to-date, the number of petitions to foreclose filed has fallen 21.5 percent to 14,521.
