Three major biotechnology companies - Abbott Laboratories, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Shire Human Genetic Therapies - have signed on to provide support to Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Biomanufacturing Education and Training Center, which will be located in the newest building at Gateway Park.
The three companies are helping in the development of the facility and curriculum offered by the training center, according to an announcement from the Waltham-based Massachusetts Life Sciences Center.
The companies will provide support for staff and students, including mentoring.
The training center will operate in the new four-story, 92,000-square-foot, $30 million building at Gateway Park that is under construction by O'Connell Development Group of Holyoke.
It's expected to include a 10,000-square-foot commercial-scale pilot biomanufacturing plant. Biomanufacturing refers to developing therapies from living cells.
Other tenants in the new building are expected to include the Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives and Blue Sky Biotech. Those two organizations will outfit their lab space with help from a $5.2 million grant from the Life Sciences Center. WPI's Fire Protection Engineering Department will also occupy space in the new building.
