Officials from Worcester's Becker College were expected to break ground on a new $9 million, 35,700-square-foot campus center in Leicester this morning.

While construction has already begun at the site, today's ceremony was an official groundbreaking for the new student center at 9 Washington Sq. in Leicester.

The new building is expected to include a fitness center, a dining hall, conference rooms and other student-use space.

Becker is working with Boylston contractor R.P. Masiello, Inc. on the project.

Becker's main campus in Worcester has 31 buildings including 14 residence halls while its Leicester campus has 24 buildings, including seven residence halls.

The school recently raised about $11.6 million to help fund the construction after setting out on a goal of raising $7.5 million.
