GDP Up 5% In Quarter, Mass. Down Slightly

The nation's gross domestic product, or the measure of the goods and services produced in the United State, posted a 5.7 percent increase between the third and fourth quarters of 2009, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysts.

For the year, GDP fell 2.4 percent across the U.S., which compares to a 0.4 percent increase in 2008.

Meanwhile, the state's economy shrunk by an estimated 0.2 percent, according to MassBenchmarks.

The state's economic index was down by 0.1 percent from November to December, and was down 1.3 percent from December 2008. However, the leading economic index, which predicts production during the next six months, rose 1.1 percent, according to MassBenchmarks.
