Quinsigamond Community College will receive a $310,000 capital grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) to boost its life sciences program.
The funds will support lab renovations and equipment and will increase life sciences offerings at the Worcester college to help strengthen its response to the local labor market and employer needs, MLSC said.
The grant will be used to update 2,000 square feet of outdated lab space and make it state of the art. According to the MLSC, the renovations will allow QCC to double the number of students enrolled in biotechnology and biomedical courses from 100 to 200 over the next three years.
"High schools and community colleges like Quinsigamond are training the next generation of Massachusetts' life sciences workers," said Dr. Susan Windham-Bannister, president and CEO of the MLSC. "We want to ensure that these schools have the first-rate training facilities they need to prepare young people in Central Massachusetts to successfully compete for jobs at all levels in the life sciences. Employers here in the region as well as across the state will be relying on this talent pipeline."
Through the MLSC, the state is investing $1 billion in life sciences over 10 years. The grant for QCC is the latest in Central Massachusetts funding from the organization, which, in December, announced more than $700,000 in grants to local vocational and public high schools to support science, technology, engineering and math education.
