Greater Worcester Community Foundation is set to establish a fund dedicated to nonprofits supporting individuals with physical disabilities, as the nonprofit has received a $1.3 million gift from a long-time donor.

GWCF’s latest donation comes from the Krikorian Family Fund as the final gift from the late George Krikorian, a philanthropist who financially supported the organization for two decades before his passing in 2024 at the age of 66.

The $1.3 million donation, representing one quarter of George’s estate plan, will be used by GWCF to launch a permanent field of interest fund to support people with physical disabilities throughout Worcester County, according to a Thursday press release from GWCF.

“The story of the Krikorian family and their generosity is a wonderful example of multigenerational philanthropy. George and his parents’ thoughtful planning and deep love for community has created a legacy that will grow over time and continue to meet critical needs across the region,” Pete Dunn, president and CEO of GWCF, said in the release.

The Kirkorian family’s gift comes after its matriarch and patriarch Anna and George Krikorian Sr. established a donor-advised fund with GWCF in 1994. After their passing, their son George assumed the role of the fund’s advisor, and has since granted $469,000 to nonprofits including Worcester Center for Crafts, Boys & Girls Club of Worcester, and Worcester County Food Bank.

After George’s passing, the Krikorian Family Fund became a discretionary fund which annually gives to GWCF.

GWCF’s recent contribution comes after the nonprofit received a $13 million pledge from the shuttered Becker College in April—the largest donation in the organization’s 50-year history.

Most of those funds, $10.2 million will contribute to the Becker Scholarship Fund, providing students with multi-year scholarships for costs of tuition, room and board, books, and other costs of attendance.

In October, GWCF established the Worcester County Green Fund, a $1 million in grant fund to finance Worcester nonprofits combatting climate change.

In 2023, GWCF generated $13.73 million in revenue and held $206.2 million in assets, according to nonprofit financial tracker GuideStar.
