Population will grow by 17 percent and job growth will spike 21 percent by 2030 in eight towns along Interstate 495, according to a group studying transportation along the highway.
The study is focused on I-495 and its intersections with five other roads and is being conducted by the Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council.
The towns included in the study are Berlin, Bolton, Hopkinton, Hudson, Marlborough, Northborough, Southborough and Westborough. The study will look at of I-495 and its intersections with the Massachusetts Turnpike, Interstate-290, Route 9, Route 20 and Simarano Drive.
The group shared the population and employment projections this morning during its first public session with employers, residents and town officials. The session was held at the 495/MetroWest Corridor Partnership Inc. in Westborough. Town officials asked that the actual and projected population and job growth numbers be double-checked as they seemed somewhat low. Other concerns included preventing tractor trailer rollovers on I-495 ramps.
Also discussed were projects underway to help those areas including a $7 million Massachusetts Turnpike Authority project to widen ramps and do other work where the Mass. Pike intersects with I-495. Also underway is a $31 million redesign and reconstruction of the intersection of I-495 and I-290.
