Hartford buildings get a gold Energy Star

Hartford is all amped after four downtown buildings received Energy Star designations for superior energy performance.

Phoenix Life Insurance Co., One State Street, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center and State House Square were all awarded the label as were five other buildings around the state.

"These facilities have shown innovation, good management and a commitment to leading the way with a new generation of environmentally-preferable building management practices," Robert Varney, regional administrator for the EPA's New England office, said in a statement.

Energy Star buildings typically use 40 percent less energy and emit 35 percent less carbon dioxide than the average building.

Buildings recognized by the EPA in New England cover more than 38 million square feet, save an estimated $52 million annually in reduced energy bills and prevent more than 400 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.
