Hologic ups the ante on sustainability and women's health

Marlborough medical device manufacturer Hologic is pushing sustainability and a women’s health agenda, according to a shareholder message by Chairman and CEO Steve MacMillan.

In a letter Tuesday to the company shareholders, MacMillan said society wants companies, public and private, to serve a social purpose. To prosper over time, every company must not only deliver financial performance, but also show how it makes a positive contribution to society, he wrote.

“Without a sense of purpose, no company, either public or private, can achieve its full potential,” MacMillan wrote.

The company places special emphasis on the healthcare needs of women, he said. Early detection of disease leads to better, more cost-effective health outcomes.

No company in the world has done more to fight cervical and breast cancer than Hologic through their diagnostic solutions, he said. While women’s health is not its sole focus (Hologic has introduced many products to also benefit men) women's health is the firm’s rallying cry, he said.

Among the company's senior management team, Hologic has promoted and hired women into key roles, including CFO, senior vice president of human resources, chief information officer, and chief of staff.

“This represents significant progress since I joined the company in late 2013, when every member of the senior management team I inherited was a white man,” MacMillan wrote. “To date, we have hired many of our senior women leaders from outside the company, but we are also developing a solid talent pipeline at all levels of our organization, and expanding this internal pipeline is a key focus going forward."

In hiring new employees, the company does not set diversity targets or quotas. Instead, he said Hologic strives to hire the most talented person for the job, and believes over time, this will lead to an increasingly diverse workforce.
