Holy Cross' Good Intentions For The Environment
The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester has finalized a plan it says will make it "carbon neutral" by 2040.
The college's "Climate Action Plan" is the work of an environmental task force made up of faculty, staff and students to promote environmentally beneficial practices on campus. The plan calls for a 20 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2015.
Hydro-electric power has already helped the college reduce emissions since its installation in 2007. The college has also installed more efficient boilers, and upgraded steam lines, lighting, computer screens and HVAC equipment.
Other initiatives on campus include reduced water and energy use in dining halls and the cultivation of a community garden. Early this year, the college's science center was overhauled and the complete renovation of Haberlin Hall is in progress.
Holy Cross has undertaken these projects as part of the University Presidents' Climate Commitment, which it signed in 2007.
