Holy Cross Prez Stepping Down

Rev. Michael C. McFarland, president of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, has announced he plans to resign.

McFarland has served as the president of the college for the past 11 years, making him the second-longest serving president in Holy Cross's history.

He will stay on in the position until a successor is found, the college said.

The college's board of trustees has appointed a search committee to find McFarland's replacement. The board is committed to appointing a Jesuit to the position.

McFarland's accomplishments since his appointment in 2000 include: a $216.3 million fundraising campaign to support financial aid, faculty resources and other expenses; the construction of two new residence halls, new athletics facilities and a $64-million science complex; and an initiative to give free tuition to students whose families earn less than $40,000 per year.
