Several state and local officials were on hand this morning, including U.S. Rep. Richard Neal, D-2nd District, to announce an expansion of Schott Electronic Packaging at the Southbridge Business Center.
Schott plans to invest $1.9 million to renovate a building at the business center located at 15 Wells St. The owner of the property, Southbridge Associates LLC, also plans to invest between $200,000 and $300,000 on improvements, including an upgrade to the roof and windows.
"This move will position us for success well into the next decade," said Bob Brisard, operations manager for Schott in Southbridge, at this morning's press conference.
Schott's main Southbridge location is on Charlton Street and about 320 people work there. After the new space at the business center is completed, new people are expected to be hired and some Schott employees from an Illinois plant are expected to be relocated to Southbridge.
During his remarks, Neal noted the importance of Schott's expansion.
"It will not only be important to the town, but to the entire South County region," he said.
Schott already has some storage space at the Wells Street location. Karl Storz, another manufacturer, will continue to occupy space in the same building.
The Southbridge Business Center is a sprawling, 11-building campus that was once home to American Optical. Schott will occupy 45,000 square feet at the business center and has signed a seven-year lease.
