Mass Sales Tax Below Average

When it comes to sales taxes, Massachusetts residents pay a bit less than average, according to a new report by the Washington, D.C.-based Tax Foundation.

Massachusetts ranks 31st on the group's list, with a state sales tax rate of 6.25 percent and no local sales tax. It is one of 17 states that don't allow local municipalities to levy their own sales taxes.

The highest combined rate is 9.44 percent in Tennessee, which has a 7-percent state tax and an average local rate of 2.44 percent. Four states, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no sales tax at all.
