Housing market down again

The housing market in Massachusetts was down between 13 and 19 percent in September, according to reports issued today by both the Massachusetts Association of Realtors and The Warren Group, publishers of Banker & Tradesman.

The Realtors organization reported single-family home and condominium sales of 3,108 units in September, a 13.7 percent decline compared to September 2006. The numbers released by the Massachusetts Association of Realtors only include transactions that involved a licensed Massachusetts Realtor.

The Warren Group reported 3,735 single-family home sales in September, an 18.7 percent decline from last year, the steepest monthly decline in a year. Condo sales also took a hit, falling to 1,893 sales from 2,353 last year, a 19.5 percent drop, according to the Warren Group.

Despite the precipitous drop in sales, the recently-ended third quarter of 2007 was still the fourth most active quarter in terms of home sales since 1990, according to the Realtors.

In Worcester County, September home sales stood at 138 in September, a 46 percent decline from the 256 sales last year, according to the Warren Group.
