ISO: No worries for winter

ISO New England Inc. in Holyoke predicts that the region should have enough power to meet consumer demand this winter.

ISO credits several reasons for this outlook, including stability in petroleum production in the Gulf of Mexico after damages suffered from last year's hurricanes.  It was also noted that more power plants have the ability to burn either natural gas or oil during fuel constraints, not uncommon in extreme winter conditions.  Finally, ISO notes that prediction for a normal winter helps ensure that there should be a reliable supply of energy through the winter.

Peak winter electricity usage is expected to reach 22,550 megawatts (MW) during the winter, a prediction that's 268 MW lower than the standing record for winter electricity use of 22,818 MW set in January of 2004.

ISO New England is the operator of the region's bulk power supply and wholesale electricity markets.  Earlier this year, the WBJ profiled ISO New England - see "We keep the lights on" in the Sept. 4 issue.
