Jean McDonough, revered local philanthropist and one half of the duo that grew the Spencer-based adhesive coating manufacturer FLEXcon into the global name it is today, died in her home on Sunday morning at the age of 93, according to her obituary.

McDonough’s husband, Myles, founded what would become FLEXcon in a Spencer garage in 1956. McDonough served on the company’s board and as treasurer of FLEXcon Co, Inc. beginning in 1960, and then managed company investments from 1976 to 2005.

McDonough is survived by her two sons, Mark and Neil McDonough, the latter of whom is chairman of FLEXcon Holdings, as well as her daughter-in-law, Lisa, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, according to her obituary.

Outside of her work with the company, McDonough was a very active member of the greater Worcester community, financially supporting the Worcester Art Museum, the Hanover Theater, Tower Hill Botanic Garden, the American Antiquarian Society, the Worcester Historical Museum, and Music Worcester. She served on WAM’s board of trustees for 16 years and the EcoTarium’s board of trustees for a decade.

Additionally, McDonough was on the council for the American Antiquarian Society and was a corporator for the Worcester Community Foundation, as well as vice president of the board at the Worcester History Museum and a member of the UMass Memorial Development Foundation.

In 2015, McDonough donated $15 million to seven cultural institutions, earning her the key to the City of Worcester, according to her obituary. Funeral services for McDonough will be private.
