Jobs Up, Unemployment Steady

The state's unemployment stood at 8.3 percent for the fifth straight month in January as the economy added 5,600 jobs, according to a preliminary estimate from the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The estimate showed 3.2 million jobs in the state. The largest gain came in the professional, scientific and business services field. Other industries gaining jobs were information, construction, financial activities, education and health services and trade, transportation and utilities. Manufacturing, government and leisure and hospitality all lost jobs.

Since last January, the state gained 18,200 jobs, and private sector jobs grew by 21,800.

Thanks to revisions by the U.S. Labor Department, the numbers now suggest a less severe recession in Massachusetts than previously thought. They show the state's unemployment peaking at 8.8 percent in October 2009 and holding steady through January 2010, rather than hitting 9.5 percent that January.
