July's 9.4% Unemployment Rate Shows Little Change

Nonfarm payroll employment declined by 247,000 in July and the unemployment rate dipped slightly to 9.4 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The unemployment rate in June was 9.5 percent.

There were 14.5 million unemployed Americans during the month and the number of people unemployed for 27 weeks or more increased by 584,000 to 5 million. One in three unemployed people in the month of July had been unemployed for more than 27 weeks.

Between May and July, the average monthly job loss was 331,000, about half the monthly average recorded between November 2008 and April.
