Kennedy, Kerry included in pork alert

Citizens Against Government Waste included a proposal by U.S. Sens. Edward Kennedy and John Kerry on its "Pork Alert" this morning.

The nonprofit organization's list of "the most egregious Small Business Administration pork barrel projects" in the Senate's 2008 financial services and appropriations bill includes $350,000 requested by the two Massachusetts senators for the Tribal Governance and Economic Development Center in Mashpee.

In all, CAGW identified 75 "pork barrel" SBA projects totaling $36 million in the proposed budget.
The center said the pork projects go against the mission of the SBA, which is to strengthen the overall economy by helping small businesses.

The center called the Kennedy-Kerry request one of the 10 "most outrageous examples of pork that senators added to the financial services bill."
