Letter To The Editor: Karl Storz Article Unfair To Pakistan

Dear Editor,

I enjoy reading the Worcester Business Journal. Your article discussing the rumor about Karl Storz having a lens repair operation in Pakistan certainly caught my eye ("Karl Storz Squares Off Against Rumors," WBJ, Oct. 15, 2007).

I found the comment, "The company wants to make it clear that it does not have lenses for their products repaired in - of all places Pakistan," very interesting. Is this negativity due to their belief that the Pakistanis are unable to reach a skill level required for such work? Or is it a political, racial or religious bias? I wonder if you asked the Karl Storz personnel you spoke to about this.

Considering the climate in the world today I can understand some of the concern about the Pakistani connection. However, in the bigger picture, it may be better to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. Positive engagement with Pakistan will improve relationships at every level. Like it or not, we are intimately tied to their future.

An article on the World Wide Web indicates that Karl Storz instruments are being effectively used at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences to improve and save patient lives. I would guess that they are used elsewhere in the country as well. Evidently, Storz is happy selling to the Pakistanis but has concerns about buying services from them.

You may want to look at the Bruker Optics (NASDAQ:

BRKR) web site. Evidently they are happily producing IR Spectrometers in Pakistan. Certainly other companies must be considering doing the same if they haven't already done so. High quality labor is hard to beat in the Third World. Witness Verizon's service centers in India, Philippines, etc., along with Fidelity's customer service center, also in India.

In my opinion, the phrase, "of all places Pakistan," was inappropriate. In fact, with some positive response, Storz could have used this opportunity to embarrass its detractors and polish its image as well.
