Mass. unemployment edges up

The state Department of Labor and Workforce Development said the Massachusetts unemployment rate in April was 4.6 percent, up from 4.4 percent in March.

The department said jobs are up by 34,500, or 1.1 percent, over last April, and are up by 92,400 since December 2003.

According to the department, the leisure and hospitality, financial activities and construction sectors added jobs in April.

Education and health services jobs were down by 700 in April following a gain of 2,600 in March.
Professional, scientific and business services jobs were down 900 in April, the first monthly decline since last October, but up by 10,500 over last April.

Jobs in trade, transportation and utilities were down 700 jobs in April compared to March, but still up by 4,400 from last April, the department said.
