Massachusetts Building Trades Council calls for statewide construction suspension

Construction of Worcester's $132-million Polar Park will soon continue.
The Massachusetts Building Trades Council said it voted on Tuesday to ask Gov. Charlie Baker for a statewide construction suspension on all non-essential projects because of the danger surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.
The group requested the suspension start Saturday and run through April 30.
"The only way to protect the health and safety of our members, their families and of the general public is to keep people apart," said Francis Callahan, president of the Massachusetts Building Trades Council, in a press release. "It is impractical and, in many cases, impossible to safely work on a construction project right now given the current state of affairs."
Essential work, according to the council, includes projects like emergency utility, road or building work, work at public health facilities and mandated utility work.
Certain cities in Massachusetts like Boston, Cambridge and Somerville have already halted construction work.
In Worcester, the $132-million Polar Park public baseball stadium is operating under a strict timeline that aims to have work done so the Pawtucket Red Sox can move in by opening day in April 2021. The City of Worcester is also juggling its $200-million South High Community School renovation, the largest public construction project in the city's history.
The building council's vote was unanimous, according to the press release.
