Need storage space? Get in line

The worldwide personal storage market is predicted to grow at a compound annual rate of more than 20 percent by 2011, according to a study released today by Framingham-based IDC.

The market for data storage saw a 70 percent increase last year, and has so far grown at a 30 percent clip in 2007, the company said. Growth has been driven primarily by the data protection and backup needs of small businesses and consumers.

"Opportunities for personal storage providers are all about simplistic, but fool-proof and effective solutions," said Wolfgang Schlichting, research director for removable storage at IDC. "The opportunity for enterprise storage OEM's is to provide back-end storage solutions to companies wishing to engage end-users with online storage services."

IDC provides market intelligence and advisory services for the IT, telecommunications and consumer technology markets.
