Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner and the Ralph C. Mahar Regional School District based in Orange have agreed to establish a new school based at the college that is designed to encourage students with disadvantages to pursue higher education.
The Pathways Early College Innovation School will open in fall 2010, enrolling 20 high school juniors from the Mahar system and other Central Massachusetts districts. A new junior class of 20 will join the school each fall, for a maximum total enrollment of 40.
The school is designed for motivated students who have "socio-economic and other challenges," according to the college.
The new school is the state's second "Innovation School." The concept, created in an education reform bill that Gov. Deval Patrick signed into law in January, is a public school created within an existing school district but employing the sort of creative approaches to education seen in charter schools. The Revere School Committee established the state's first Innovation School in May.
The Pathways school is an extension of Gateway to College, an existing partnership between the Mahar district and MWCC that serves high school dropouts and students in danger of dropping out.
