North County Cos. Win Spot In Change Program

Manufacturers in Fitchburg and Leominster are among five in the state chosen to participate in the Next Generation Manufacturing Initiative.

Munksjo Paper of Fitchburg, a manufacturer of coated and laminated paper, and Spectro Coatings Corp. of Leominster, a manufacturer of textiles and films used in the automobile and home goods industries, won spots in the program.

The program is the result of a partnership between the Associated Industries of Massachsuetts, the Massachusetts Manufacturing Institute, MassDevelopment and the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership.

As part of the program, the five companies must be willing to make radical changes to their business and must be willing to make significant investments in employees, processes and facilities. The companies will undergo an in-depth assessment that will result in recommendations for change, make projections for return on investment and provide a roadmap to guide the companies through the refinement and upgrading of their operations.

The goal is to help the companies become "next generation" manufacturers. The other three companies to win spots in the program are: Hoppe Tools in Chicopee, the Mason Box Co. in North Attleboro and Matouk Textiles in Fall River.
