Personality Matters

The past five years have brought a huge jump in the importance of people skills for accounting and finance professionals, according to a survey by staffing firm Accountemps.

The survey asked 1,400 CFOs what one attribute would be most likely to lead them to pick one qualified candidate over another for an accounting or financing position. In 2004, only 1 percent cited "personality or people skills." In 2009, it was the most popular answer, at 31 percent.

The perceived importance of "industry-specific experience" fell steeply, with 41 percent choosing it in 2004 and just 20 percent doing so this year. "Software/technology knowledge" dropped slightly, from 33 to 27 percent, and "certification or advanced degree" fell from 15 to 11 percent.
