Phil A. Benvenuti, senior director of internal audit, Fallon Community Health Plan

Benvenuti

Phil Benvenuti has worked to sniff out fraud at Rhode Island accounting firm Sansiveri, Kimball & McNamee LLP and at Hanover Insurance in Worcester. He's now doing the same type of work at Fallon Community Health Plan in Worcester, where he was recently promoted to senior director of internal audit. In this Q&A, he talks about carrying on a family tradition in his career choice and ordering hot dogs based on his plans for the afternoon.

Vital Stats:
Age: 41
Residence: Auburn
Family: Wife Cheryl, son PJ, two cats and one dog
Education: Bachelor's degree, Assumption College; currently working on an MBA from Assumption.
Previous job: Director of internal audit at FCHP.

Q. What challenges do you see in your new position?
A. We are always challenged with staying ahead of the fraud that is perpetrated against FCHP and other health insurers.

Q. What's your favorite thing about Central Massachusetts?

A. It is where I grew up, so the familiarity is what I like. Every corner I turn, I can usually find someone that knows me or someone in my family.

Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?
A. I thought I would have been hitting in the third slot for the Boston Red Sox by now! Actually, it is very close to what I was thinking of doing in high school. My dad was in this line of work for 32 years at MetLife, and I have always looked up to him (and my mom).

Q. How far is your commute to the office?

A. 7.4 miles

Q. What's the best way to keep your energy and motivation up when you're having a long day?
A. I try to exercise at lunch when I can. We have a gym here at FCHP, and I also will sometimes run through downtown. A 30-second mental vacation to my favorite beach also helps, and my staff always provides good inspiration for me.

Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your location?
A. Can't go wrong with a quick lunch at Coney Island - two dogs loaded (no onions if I have a meeting) and a chocolate milk.

Q. Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
A. Spending time with family, exercising, the Red Sox, and fishing off my boat down the Cape.
