Productivity Gets Tackled

This month, productivity-minded managers should be glad they're not operating in Brazil, Germany or any of the many other soccer-obsessed nations of the world. That's according to outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., which says the World Cup will have some impact on American workplaces but not as much as many other sporting events.

The firm compiled what it calls a "non-scientific, non-binding" top 10 list of sports events that can make U.S. offices grind to a halt. Topping the list is March Madness, with its office pools and daytime games. Fantasy Football and the Super Bowl follow, thanks to many employees' obsession with football-and the less-than-perky Mondays that follow the big game.

The World Cup comes in at fourth place partly because of its impact on companies' worldwide operations.

Coming in at number 10 is "Apple product announcements," which Challenger said get a place on the list despite their non-sporting nature because of the amount of hype and speculation that comes with them.

Here's the full list:

  1. March Madness
  2. NFL Fantasy Football
  3. The Super Bowl
  4. World Cup Soccer
  5. College Football Bowl Season
  6. Baseball Playoffs and World Series
  7. NHL Playoffs/Stanley Cup Finals
  8. NBA Playoffs/Finals
  9. The Olympics
  10. Apple Product Announcements
