Raytheon wins military upgrade contract

Raytheon Co.'s Marlboro operations announced the company has been awarded an $84.6 million contract to make upgrade kits for U.S. Army and Marine Corps equipment.

The contract requires Raytheon to produce upgrade kits for its Secure Mobile Anti-jam Reliable Tactical Terminal, or SMART-T satellite communications system.

The system kits are Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) systems, and are the U.S. Department of Defense's primary system for high-security, tactical military satellite communication.

Under the contract, Raytheon will also make the upgrade kits for Canada and the Netherlands.

Raytheon has 300 SMART-T systems in operation currently, the company said, and plans to upgrade the same system for the U.S. Navy and Air Force in the near future.

The upgrade kits will be produced at Raytheon's facility in Largo, Fla.
