Pedal to the metal for wholesale club sales

Natick-based BJ's Wholesale Club Inc. reported March sales of $790.8 million, a 10 percent increase over March 2006 sales.

The company said the strongest sales numbers compared to 2006 were in dairy, deli, paper products, produce, soda and water, and televisions.

Categories that showed weaker sales than last year were DVDs, jewelry, lawn care, residential furniture and toys.

The company expects April sales to be flat, or to see a slight increase over March.

Sales in March were helped by the sale of gasoline, the company said, but hurt by the absence of in-store pharmacies, which the company closed in February, the company said.
