Simsbury man sentenced for stealing $2 million from employer

Federal authorities say a Simsbury insurance worker has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for embezzling nearly $2 million from his employer.

Jeffrey Bourke pleaded guilty in October to four counts of mail fraud and one count of filing a false tax return.

Authorities say Bourke formed a sham company in September 2003 called Health Management Solutions that he used to embezzle money from his employer, a major health insurer that has not been identified. He created fictitious invoices that falsely represented goods and services provided to his employer by Health Management Solutions.

Prosecutors say Bourke used the money to buy and renovate a home and for expensive watches, artwork and vacations.

The 33-year-old Bourke was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Hartford.
