Small Business Recovery Slow, Difficult

The National Federation of Independent Business Index of Small Business Optimism gained 1.6 points to finish May at 92.2, its highest reading since September 2008.

Still, the NFIB is far from optimistic about the economy.

After the precipitous decline that started about two years ago, "pent up demand should be immense," the small business advocacy group said. But so far, there has been no "rapid pickup in economic activity."

The NFIB said employers are still shedding workers, capital spending is stuck at all-time lows and far more small businesses are cutting prices rather than raising them.

These conditions are enough to offset sales increases that were better than they've been in more than a year.
