Survey: More bonuses, less time off

A recent survey conducted by Washington, D.C.-based BNA shows that while more employers plan to give gifts and bonuses in the holiday season, an increasing number don't foresee granting additional time off.

The BNA Year-End Holiday Practices Survey is comprised of responses from human resources executives representing 214 U.S. employers.  49 percent of those surveyed will give employees cash awards and bonuses or holiday gift items this year.  Those numbers represent an increase of 40 percent over last year, and the highest number ever recorded in the history of the survey.

Compared to previous years when a holiday fell on a Monday, fewer employers are granting additional time off.  This year, 43 percent of employers plan to give employees three or more paid holidays.  In 2000, 49 percent planned on granting the additional time off, and 60 percent of employers did so in 1989.

Manufacturing facilities were shown to be among the most generous, with 82 percent granting at least three paid vacation days at year end, surpassing non-manufacturing/services establishments (33 percent) and non-business establishments (28 percent).
