Thermo Fisher To Buy Canadian Firm For $260M

Thermo Fisher Scientific, a Waltham-based laboratory equipment firm with operations in Central Massachusetts, said it will acquire Fermentas International Inc. for $260 million in cash.

Fermentas is based in Ontario, Canada and has about 500 employees. The company makes enzymes, reagents and kits for molecular and cellular biology research.

Thermo Fisher said acquiring Fermentas allows the company to expand into the molecular and cell biology markets.

Thermo Fisher said it will "integrate" Fermentas into its Analytical Technologies Segment. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter.
