Transportation Industry Props Up Durable Goods Orders

New orders for manufactured durable goods increased 0.3 percent in July, thanks to the transportation industry, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The increase followed two straight months of decreases. New orders totaled $193 billion during the month.

Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 3.8 percent. The Census Bureau said non-defense aircraft parts were the primary driver behind the increase.

Durable goods shipments were also up in July, reaching $200 billion. That's a $4.4 billion increase compared to June.
