UMass Med School Still Without Permanent Chancellor

Formal search committee coming in 2008

Nine months after Aaron Lazare stepped down as chancellor of UMass Medical School, the effort to find a permanent replacement for him has not yet formally started.

Bob Connelly, a spokesman for University of Massachusetts president Jack Wilson, said the UMass system will probably announce the formation of a search committee early next year.

During December, Connelly said, Wilson has been holding meetings at the Worcester campus with students, faculty, staff and scientists to get a sense of what they are looking for in a new leader.

Candidate Pool

No candidates for the position have been named yet, but Wilson has said that Michael Collins, who has been acting as interim chancellor since May, could seek the position if he chooses. Connelly said he does not think Collins' interim position would make him a shoo-in for the permanent job even if he wants it.

"I've actually seen, both here at UMass and nationally, cases where an interim leader isn't successful in a quest for the permanent position," he said.

Once the search does start, Connelly said, a search committee, assisted by a consultant, will develop a candidate pool and recommend finalists to Wilson. The president will then send a single name on to the board of trustees for a vote. The process will take at least several months, and possibly longer, Connelly said.

"It can run the gamut from a single semester to a full academic year," he said.

Before being appointed to the interim post at UMass Medical School, Collins had been chancellor of UMass Boston.
