UMass Med To Break Ground On New Facility

The University of Massachusetts Medical School will break ground today on a $400 million, 500,000-square-foot research and education facility at its Worcester campus.

Dubbed the Albert "Albie" Sherman Center, the facility will house the school's Advanced Therapeutics Cluster, including the RNAi Institute, the Center for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, the Gene Therapy Center, the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences and the Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation.

The facility is expected to be LEED Silver certified and is expected to be complete in 2012.

The groundbreaking is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today and will feature Michael F. Collins, chancellor of UMass Worcester; Jack M. Wilson, UMass president; and Sherman, vice chancellor for university relations.
