UMass Memorial Health Care of Worcester has been in talks with local nursing students and has set up a website to make it easier for them to join the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

UMass Memorial has set up a site where students with medical training can sign up to potentially help staff a makeshift care facility being set up at Worcester's DCU Center. The space, with 250 beds, is planned to treat less severe coronavirus cases and free up space for intensive care patients at UMass Memorial Medical Center, Saint Vincent Hospital and elsewhere.

UMass Memorial Health Care President and CEO Eric Dickson said Wednesday the hospital has been in touch with Worcester State University, Becker College, UMass Lowell and other schools whose nursing students may be able to help staff the DCU Center operations.

UMass Memorial, which will be directing care at the DCU Center, is looking for students in a medical, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, or respiratory program. Students will be asked to perform a variety of patient care activities and assist members of the healthcare team under the direction of a registered nurse.

Qualifications include a high school diploma, computer and medical terminology experience, current basic life support certification and completion of at least one clinical rotation in an applicable program. Prior inpatient or outpatient care experience or clinical care training is preferred.
