U.S. Sheds 598,000 Jobs In January

Nonfarm payroll employment fell by 598,000 jobs in January, while the unemployment rate rose from 7.2 percent to 7.6 percent.

Data released today by the U.S. Department of Labor shows the employment number down by 3.6 percent since the official start of the current recession in December 2007.

January's increase brings the total number of unemployed people to 11.6 million.
