U.S. trade deficit widens

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced today that total May exports of $132 billion and imports of $192.1 billion resulted in a U.S. trade deficit of $60 billion, compared with revised $58.7 billion for April.

May exports were $2.9 billion more than April exports of $129.2 billion. May imports were $4.2 billion more than April imports of $187.8 billion. In May, the goods deficit increased $1.7 billion from April to $69 billion, and the services surplus increased $300 million to $9 billion. Exports of goods increased $2.4 billion to $93.3 billion, and imports of goods increased $4 billion to $162.3 billion. Exports of services increased $500 million to $38.7 billion, and imports of services increased $200 million to $29.8 billion.
