WBJ Talk Back In The February 1, 2010 Issue

“In my work I see so many well-intentioned people who want to mentor another, but who really don’t know how to do it. Mentoring is more than sharing stories about what it took to get where you are today and talking about necessary skills. It involves teaching protégés how to think creatively, how to think like a leader, and how to see the gaps the way a senior person sees them.”

OdysseyMentor on an op-ed in the Jan. 18 edition about the lack of women in corporate boardrooms.

“This is not a surprising trend since the electronic tools today make telecommuting very productive for companies … As one who has worked out of his home for more than two years as a director of R&D for a multinational company, I support this trend.”

Ian on a U.S. Census report that the number of people who worked at home increased by nearly 2 million between 1999 and 2005.

“I think a great way of getting the feel for the culture of a company is to ask: What do people get ‘rewarded’ for around here? For example, if our culture is about total customer focus, what does the individual who consistently goes the extra mile for customers get as a reward? In too many businesses, the reward is more work!”

andyhanselman on a how-to article in the Worcester Business Journal about corporate culture.
