The greater Worcester area's unemployment rate fell sharply from 7.3 percent to 6.8 percent in November as more than 600 people found jobs and the labor force shrank by nearly 1,000.
The rate has fallen from 8.6 percent over the past year, according to the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
Northern Worcester County communities, as well as Framingham and Athol, also saw gains. The Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner area added 354 jobs to lower its unemployment rate from 6.3 percent to 5.7 percent. The Framingham area added 1,186 jobs to bring its rate from 5.2 percent to 4.7 percent. And Athol added 151 jobs to lower its rate from 8.9 percent to 8.4 percent.
The numbers released today are not seasonally adjusted. They come on the heels of a report a week ago that found Massachusetts' unemployment rate had fallen from a seasonally adjusted 7.3 percent to 7 percent. (By comparison, the unadjusted state rate fell from 6.8 percent to 6.4 percent in November.)
