Worcester extends outdoor dining program through end of year

The City of Worcester License Commission voted to extend the city’s temporary outdoor dining program through the end of the calendar year on Thursday.

Licenses under the program were previously scheduled to expire May 1.

The temporary outdoor dining program is intended to make it easier for restaurant owners to obtain approval for outdoor dining, and also allows for outdoor dining on a larger scale than is typically allowed.

Some 96 restaurants have taken part in the program, according to the City, which cast it as a lifeline for many participants.

The program will remain available for new applicants. However, if the state of emergency is lifted before the end of the calendar year, licenses will remain in effect only 60 additional days.
