Worcester, Hudson receive health care grants

The Worcester and MetroWest regions will each receive roughly $3 million to 4 million over the next four years to help fight chronic illness and reduce health care costs.

The community-based partnerships will be spearheaded by the cities of Worcester and Hudson and will work to address issues such as hypertension, smoking, prevention of falls among older adults and pediatric asthma, according to the Patrick administration. The groups will work to reduce the rates of the most preventable health conditions, increase the adoption of workplace wellness programs and address health disparities.

Worcester and Hudson – two of the state’s nine award recipients – will each receive up to $250,000 for the first phase of funding and additional funding of $900,000 to $1.5 million over each of the ensuing three years. Worcester’s program will focus on 118,000 of the city’s most disadvantaged residents, the city said.

“This is an exciting opportunity to strengthen the ongoing work of Worcester’s Community Health Improvement plan,” City Manager Ed Augustus said in a statement. “Our children need these vital resources, and by partnering with the Worcester Public Schools we shall support those families where asthma has impacted a child’s ability to enjoy a healthy environment.”

Other partners for Worcester include UMass Memorial Medical Center, UMass Medical School and Fallon Community Health Plan. Hudson will partner with MetroWest Medical Center and nearby municipalities such as Marlborough, Framingham and Northborough.
