WPI Gamers Better Stock Up On Cheetos

Video game geeks at WPI will now have a legitimate excuse to spend their weekend in a sweat-filled, fast food-fueled gaming frenzy, as the school hosts a weekend-long "GameJam" for aspiring video game developers beginning tonight at 7 p.m.

During GameJam, student teams will work together to create video games, with the option of entering the game they create during the 38-hour marathon into Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's 38 Studios first annual Massachusetts Game Challenge. Schilling's uniform number is 38.

Contestants in Schilling's challenge, which is open to students studying game design at all of the state's universities and colleges, must design a playable video game featuring the 38 Studios mascot and his alter ego, Mean Munch, as well as create additional characters for Munch’s “posse.”

Teams will be judged on the quality of the overall finished product, originality, visual polish, stability, length of quality game play, and expanded market vision and product strategy. The grand prize is $3,000 to each winning team member; 2nd prize is $2,000 each; and 3rd prize is $1,000 each.
