WPI Report: Achievement Gap Still An Issue For Bay State

A new study by Worcester Polytechnic Institute researchers finds that Massachusetts lags in its ability to close the achievement gap between white and minority students.

Specifically, the report looked at data from The College Board on advanced-placement test results among the Class of 2010. The analysis found that Massachusetts ranks fifth among all states and the District of Columbia in the percentage of seniors who earned a score of 3 or higher on an AP exam. The AP exams are graded on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest.

However, Massachusetts ranks 48th in closing the AP performance gap for Hispanic/Latino students and 17th for closing the gap for Black/African-American students.

The WPI study also looked at the results of 21 high schools in Massachusetts that are participating in the Mass Math + Science Initiative (MMSI). The achievement gap was significantly narrowed at those schools.

MMSI is led by Mass Insight Education and is one of six programs nationwide funded by a private grant from the National Math & Science Initiative.
